Spiritual Warfare Part 2: What Is It?

spiritual warfare

If you are new to the concept of spiritual warfare, you might quickly find yourself asking, “What is it?” I know, because it was one of my own questions. For a long time, it did not hold the importance in my life that it should have. Mainly because, I simply didn’t know what it was.

As we saw in Part 1 of the Spiritual Warfare topics, we have to know our enemy. Being wise to who he is and what he can and will do, is very important. It’s the only way we can pray effectively to stop his progress in bringing us down!

But now, we look at the very definition of spiritual warfare, what it is, and why it’s so important.

Spiritual Warfare, Simply Stated

In the simplest of terms, spiritual warfare is really any means the enemy uses to draw us away from God. The Bible says that satan blinds the eyes of a person and keeps them from seeing. This is most often the case of the person who is lost. It is satan who keeps their eyes blinded in many cases.

  • In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.2 Corinthians 4:4

However, he will try to blind yours as well (2 Peter 1:9). In fact, the first thing he wants to blind you to is the fact that there is even spiritual warfare going on at all!

If we are unaware of the warfare, it also makes us unaware of the all-encompassing victory that we can find in the blood of Jesus. Why, it’s even already finished! Not only does the blood give us the win, Jesus’ shed blood on the cross has already accomplished it!

Isn’t that great news?

Hard To See With Our Eyes

The Bible also tells us that there is a spiritual realm that is very real, but it’s also hard to see. Many times, throughout Scripture, God reveals the spiritual realm to certain people, for different intents and purposes. But the overall point is: it’s THERE and it is REAL.

We just can’t see it with these old eyes of flesh.

Even though we can’t see it, you’d better believe it’s as real as the words you’re reading here today. We can trust that it’s there because God has made sure to include plenty of reference to it in the Word. If it weren’t important that we know it’s there, that wouldn’t be the case.

But since it is, we need to know that even though our eyes can’t perceive it, it is real, it’s there, and we have to battle against it. Spiritual warfare is the way we do that.

It All Starts With Temptation

Spiritual warfare has many facets, but none so frequently used by the enemy as temptation. Temptation means something different for each of us. It consists of those things that lead us away from God and away from His Truth and will for our lives.

The fact is, we are all tempted in different ways, and the Bible tells us that’s nothing new. But, thank God, the Word also says that even though we are tempted, we always have a way out.

  • There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.1 Corinthians 10:13

God never leaves us completely hopeless, but gives us a means of escape. We just have to take the steps to access that escape. A fire exit in a building is great, and saves many lives. However, if a person doesn’t walk towards it and utilize it, it does them no good. The fire could kill them.

So it is spiritually. When the temptation comes, like the building fire, we have to know where that escape is. Know it, utilize it, access it and let it be our means to life in place of death!

The Enemy Knows Which Buttons To Push

The enemy knows us. He knows me, and he knows you. Not only does he know us, he’s taken the time to study the way we have reacted to certain things for years and years. Since we were children, for sure. And not only does he know our points of weakness, he gets so much JOY from poking and prodding us with them.

The enemy’s one and only goal is to separate us from the love of God and His providence for our lives. He knows that as far as HE is concerned, he’s fighting a losing battle. In the end, he loses, plain and simple. However, he wants to take as many down with him as possible. And so, we fight.

He doesn’t give up, he doesn’t give in, and he doesn’t take a breather to try to recoup. He knows exactly what he’s doing and won’t stop until he’s won or we have relentlessly proven that it’s no use for him to keep up. And he is deceitful, as the father of lies, and is the most manipulating force you will ever reckon with.

  • Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. – John 8:44

Good News Prevails!

While the assaults from the enemy are real, and his tactics sometimes hard to understand, we have a great promise. Our faith and trust in Jesus, and the access we have to being able to plead His shed blood over our lives and circumstances, will give us the victory every single time!

We aren’t left uninformed of the tactics of the enemy and, praise God, we aren’t left without a way to fight back. Just knowing that the battle is real is a good portion of the fight. A blind eye to even the possibility that the spiritual realm, and the attacks of the enemy, are not real is a great big win for the enemy.

But we serve a risen God, a Savior who loves us and cares enough to equip us for battle for a victorious life. He will even fight our battles for us! God equips us with the Word, the Blood and our testimony, and we will look further into how they work together in my future posts.

Be Encouraged!

Don’t lose faith, and don’t lose hope! If you are only just now learning about spiritual warfare, that’s ok! Don’t sit and think about how long you didn’t know, just be determined to learn all that you can. Because now that you know, you are going to see things start to turn around.

God loves you! Jesus died so that you would have access to all that you need! Be ready, because you are on the verge of experiencing breakthrough!

Hi Stacey, it’s true, the enemy knows which buttons to push, which tactic will work on each of us. We need to be aware of this and tighten up the armour so his fiery darts can’t get through. The only statement I question is the one about satan getting such JOY. I would think that the isn’t capable of JOY. I can see him laughing at us when he’s reeled another one in but JOY? What do you think?

I certainly see your point. I suppose “joy” in whatever way he’s capable of it. I mean, he was “the cherub that covers” in heaven…surely he would be capable of the emotion unless God stripped it away. I would think. Certainly worth more study on the subject! Thanks for pointing that out!
