Do You Get It?

Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

Proverbs 4:5-7

There are tons of Scriptures that address the importance of wisdom and understanding. But one of the most important pieces of wisdom in the Scripture above, is found in the word “GET”…GET wisdom… GET understanding… in all thy GETTING, GET understanding.

The translation from Greek leads away from what the original word actually meant or implied, and that was an idea of possession, or purchase, or buying something.

In other words, if you really want wisdom…

It will cost you time… and effort… and praise… and worship (even sacrificially)… and it will cost you prayer… and fasting. Yes, there is a price to pay.

And it’s worth it all.

Because wisdom isn’t just “head knowledge”. No, it’s a kind of shrewdness for everyday life. It’s a skill for war. Particularly the spiritual kind. “Understanding” may seem like the same thing, but really it’s not. Understanding, in its original language, means an understanding, as in discernment, or “perfect understanding”.

And THAT is what we are – in all of our getting – suppose to get. And doesn’t that make perfect sense? To get through this life, especially in the day in which we live, we’re going to have to have some shrewdness, and we are DEFINITELY going to have to get some discernment. Praise God, we were given the keys for just such a thing, and the Baptism of the Holy Ghost for teaching. Even Jesus spoke about it:

If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

John 7:17

Oh, the message in this one little Scripture!

In order to DO his will, we must first have the discernment to know what that will is. Since we know that no man can come to the Father except the Spirit draw him, we’re halfway there.

And if we DO his will, then we will KNOW the doctrine. A doctrine so far removed from the hearts of most “religious” people, it isn’t even familiar to just everyone.

Then the verse closes out with a clear message in plain sight… “whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.” Of course, we know Jesus isn’t going to speak of himself. Remember when he clarified that?

Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

John 14:10

See, Jesus is NOT contradicting Himself. He’s giving his hearers a chance to discern… to be shrewd with the facts. To reason it out in their own hearts that we serve ONE GOD, with ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM… ONE DOCTRINE… and all we have to do to know that doctrine is to DO his will.

All of that truth comes from the discernment (wisdom and understanding) that we work so hard to GET.

I say all that to say this: that wisdom and understanding aren’t things that can just be GIVEN. You can’t just receive it, having put in no effort at all. It’s gonna cost us.

So for all those struggles… for all those sleepless nights, tear-stained pillows, and wrestling matches in prayer… we aren’t without a reward.

Through all of THAT… we were GETTING.

Do you get it?
