Heed the watchmen.
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.
Jeremiah 6:12
“The good old days” seem to be gone, don’t they? It was a lot like that in Jeremiah’s time too. He even seemed to say some of the same things so many believers still say today.
Just in another place… another time…
To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach [a taunt, shame, disgrace]; they have no delight in it.
Jeremiah 6:10
It was a time when all, from the greatest to the least, were “given to covetousness [unjust gain, dishonest profit acquired by violence], and even the PROPHETS and the PRIESTS dealt falsely with each other!
They cried PEACE when there was none, and there was no shame for the abominations they committed.
Watchmen, To Warn…
So God told them to walk in the old ways… but they refused.
So God set up watchmen to warn… but they wouldn’t listen.
Still, through it all, through all the warnings and all the stumblingblocks and all the rejection, there is hope.
But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.
Jeremiah 7:23
Reading these two chapters today, it’s easy to see what happens when people turn away from God. But just like Jeremiah, we have the opportunity to say “What saith the Lord”. We have a chance to proclaim the good news of the Gospel to them that have no hope.
They won’t all listen. In fact, many won’t. But that’s not OUR concern.
HEED the WATCHMEN.
