Our Enemy: Spiritual Warfare Part 1

Knowing The Enemy

I’ve never personally been on the battlefield. But as I understand it, in order to win a battle of any sort, you have to have at least a little bit of information on the enemy that you’re fighting against.

For instance, our military certainly wouldn’t want to go up against anyone or anything that they weren’t prepared for to start with.

Well, this is the same situation we’re in when we are waging spiritual warfare, which is a very real thing! We have to know exactly who it is that we’re fighting so that we can be successful. Whether we are to fight offensively or defensively, there is a lot riding on our ability to know the enemy.

Who Is Our Enemy?

In order to know our own enemy, we must consult God’s Word. Our enemy, the devil, has put up the same fight since the third chapter of Genesis. In fact, the book of Ezekiel allows us to see the origin of the devil, before creation ever even happened…

  • Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. (Ezekial 28:13-18)

Lucifer was a guardian, a coverer and the very height of God’s angels.

He was perfect.

The Manipulation of the Enemy

Don’t be deceived… we are fighting an enemy SO manipulative, that he convinced one-third of all the angels in heaven to turn their backs on God and follow him!

Sounds a little crazy doesn’t it? That the angels would even consider the thought, even for the slightest fraction of a second? It sure did to me.

Back before I got serious about my faith, I think I read over this as a sort of fairy tale. Like it was a story I knew, but it seemed to end there… as just a story.

Well, it’s so much more than that! He DID manipulate the angels to rebel and they WERE cast out with him. Not to be deterred, however, satan went on to keep deceiving people.

The First Battle Win For Lucifer

His first human battle win was Eve herself. He played on the very things that God had told her and Adam. But he told her that it couldn’t really be true. Then he went on to back up his argument with his own ideas and persuasions. Surely Eve took them to deep consideration, because she went right along with him.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. He racked up his second battle win without lifting a finger! His manipulation had worked so well on Eve that she passed that manipulation right along to her husband, Adam!

Of course, Adam had no reason to believe that Eve was even manipulating him in the first place. He loved and trusted her. He had no reason to believe she was anything other than the helper that God had created her to be.

To be fair, though, Eve probably didn’t realize just how wrong she really was. I mean, after all, that serpent sure made a good case. And God was nowhere around. He wasn’t there trying to stop it from happening and He had sent no signs to steer her away…

No, He had only left her with His instructions: DON’T EAT THAT. Which should have been enough.

And So, The Enemy Starts The War…

Lucifer’s pride and desire to be the “head honcho” is exactly why he and a third of the angels were thrown out of Heaven.

And so began the war.

In fact, his hatred is sharply focused on each and every human being on this earth. He realized, in his experiment with Eve, that he could not only sway humans against the will of God, but he could use THEM to get to others. Don’t think for a minute that you are exempt from his wrath or his willingness to throw us to the slaughter!

The war is real. But satan is a liar. Remember that.

God calls him the “father of lies” (John 8:44). He is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10) and his sole purpose is to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10). He will not stop his onslaught either, until his final day. So you can never be too cautious, too ready, or too armored up!

The Good News!

As we begin our journey into the idea of spiritual warfare, we should never forget the most important thing. That is that we have Jesus! Oh what good news to know that we don’t have to hunker down in fear and live defeated!

How praise-worthy our God is, among all things, to have given us the salvation and the sonship it would take to defeat the enemy in our lives and the lives of our loved ones! Praise God!

If you haven’t already accepted the gift of salvation, won’t you consider it today? Give your life to the One who created ALL life, and leave the victory in His capable hands.

  1. Yes, Satan is a liar indeed. The hard part is remembering that in the midst of a battle.

Yes mam! That was the very hardest part for me as well, since I’m the type that always wants to handle everything myself. I had to post Scripture cards all over my house so that the Word was constantly in front of my eyes. Still, it’s hard sometimes.

  2. Amen! Thank you for writing the truth on who the real enemy is, and our great God who is our victory!

    1. Author

Thank you so much for stopping by to read! I’ve prayed for the boldness to lay out the Truth, and I pray He continues to guide my fingers and my mouth. Glory to His Name!

  3. Hi Stacey. Your sentence about Eve passing on the manipulation, unaware, to Adam, caught my eye. I had not seen it as manipulation but twisted truth. I also saw it as Eve was not told personally by God but through Adam, that it is possible since she wasn’t told directly (by God) that she didn’t know the full impact of this ‘command’.

Thanks for laying out the ground of the beginning of spiritual warfare.

Cindy, that is a great observation! That’s why I enjoy hearing from others like this…it gives new light to the subject. There’s always more to think about in the Scriptures than just “face value”! Thank you so much for sharing!
